Humanity’s love affair with teddy bears started historically around 1903 when USA president Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear during one of this hunting trips and the incident led to a series of satirical posts who influenced Morris Michtom to produce a cute a little cute cub whom he called “Teddy’s Bear”.
By coincidence, in Germany, the Steiff Company started producing a line of stuffed toys in the shape of the bear.
Teddy Bears have been used to mark important historical moments, for example the commemoration of the Titanic sinking.
A loved and widely bought soft toy, the love for it doesn’t stop when leaving the childhood behind. Adults love teddy bears just as much and many psychologists tried to explain why. It’s not just the cute looks and the sensory experience due to it’s softness and smooth texture. It is a feeling of comfort and shared love; it’s a boost in confidence; apparently cuddling a teddy bear releases Oxytocin which is a neurotransmitter also known as the “love hormone” or the “cuddle hormone” which plays an active role against stress.
Initially the first teddy bears to be commercialised were the brown ones, resembling the popular wild bears. Over time, more types of teddies appeared like the polar bears, grizzly bears or the pandas.A famous Teddy Bear, Winnie The Pooh, was actually inspired by a real Canadian bear, a female called Winnie, named after the Canadian name of Winnipeg.
